Inland options

STONEY1thumbThe UK's inland dive sites..

Photo: Bonnie Coupland

Inland options Vobster Lake, Somerset:
A well-organised operation set in a flooded cement quarry. Light on fish, but above-average visibility and a big underwater tunnel provide plenty of entertainment.

Stoney Cove, Leicestershire:
The big one – a diving lake with a decent restaurant, a shop and a swimming pool overlooking the whole thing. Stoney (see left) is probably Britain’s single most popular dive destination, as the guy queuing for the car park at 3am will attest.

Capernwray, Cumbria:
The north’s favourite lake dive, complete with harbour minesweeper, Wessex helicopter (two of ‘em!) and fibreglass horses for those who like to really make the most of nitrogen narcosis. Very good visibility in winter.

National Diving and Activity Centre, Chepstow:
Popular with tech divers because of its buoyed 75m pit, this flooded quarry also has a good set of attractions and facilities for every level of diver. Now there are plans to build a 122-bed hotel on the site, creating a facility that could eclipse its rivals

Gildenburgh Water, Peterborough:
Stoney’s big rival – a former brickworks where visibility may never be massive, but neither are the queues for parking. Underwater attractions include a bus, an aeroplane and some diver-friendly pike.

Wraysbury Reservoir, Middlesex:
DIVE’s local lake – a shallow expanse of water with the usual array of buses and sunken boats. The visibility may not be the greatest, but it’s friendly, relaxed and the bacon sarnies are always good.
