Skomer Island, West Wales

Haven60The North Wall is one of the most popular dive sites around Skomer Island.

Photo: Richard Trevithick

Distance from Martin's Haven: 3.2nM Slack water: two hours after LW.
The North Wall is one of the most popular dive sites around Skomer Island. If divers are dropped off close to the cliff face, they can descend the kelp-covered rocks to 6m and then continue down near vertical walls until they reach the sandy slope at the bottom of the rocks at about 35m.

Having reached this point, by slowly working up the walls, exploring every nook and cranny, the prolific diversity of life can be appreciated. Devonshire cup corals, red fingers, sea scorpions and crayfish, make up some of the wall's more interesting residents. Slack is the best time to dive, but the wall can also be dived as a drift. If using an SMB, beware of snagging the line on pot markers, which are often used in this area. It is not unusual for inquisitive seals to pop up close to the boat in this area.
