The far northern atolls of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani and Noon are so remote that an internal flight is required to reach them. Consequently there are few resorts and few tourists and the whole area feels unvisited and undeveloped. Very few safari boats make the long journey north so divers can be assured of no other divers at chosen sites, and with so few diver visitors to such a large geographical region, there are many dive sites still to be discovered.
The Far North is famous for its deep thilas with shark cleaning stations where dozens of grey sharks may be observed riding the current points. There are also isolated thilas with a greater-than-average chance of seeing Zebra sharks and spotted and bow mouth guitar sharks as the sites are infrequently visited by divers. Over the past couple of years we have discovered some manta points and this year we will be looking forward to conducting further research on local populations and migrations between the different atolls. Visiting divers are encouraged to assist in identification of mantas and can learn more about manta ecology and behaviour.
The northernmost atoll is famous for the spectacular soft coral canyons and pinnacles sites which are a photographers delight. There is a large shallow wreck which is a fish magnet, and large pods of spinner dolphins are frequently seen in the vicinity. The far north of the Maldives offers rare and exciting diving opportunities. We only offer itineraries during the calmer weather months of March and April as the area becomes difficult to navigate during periods of rough weather and Sea Spirit remains based in the north throughout this period to avoid the long travels to and from the central atolls, maximising the time
spent in the north.
