The magical, isolated Cocos Island lies 260 miles off the coast of Costa Rica in the Pacific. It is the world's largest uninhabited island rich with lush jungle, cries of tropical birds and cascading waterfalls. A remote underwater pinnacle is a one-of-a-kind dive adventure surrounded by a bustling oasis of marine life. Glide amid schools of hammerheads, white tip sharks and the elusive whale shark, watch the silent ballet of giant manta rays or be dazzled by the sheer numbers of schooling fish. Don't forget study the life on the seafloor—spiny lobster, stingrays, marbled rays, goat fish, eels and array of reef fish are all around. The trip out to this diver's dream takes 32-36 hours from Puntarenas each way so bring a good book to relax with as the luxury liveaboards take you away to an adventure on Cocos Island. Experienced divers only please. All trips are for eleven nights with seven full days of diving. 4993 views |

The EPA is stepping up efforts to monitor radiation levels in the United States following reports of elevated levels across the country as a result of Japan's nuclear reactor meltdown. Two states—Washington and California—reported finding trace amounts of radiation in milk this week. However, federal officials and nuclear experts have repeatedly assured the public that individuals in the United States do not face increased risk of radiation poisoning. After the jump, we explore some common questions about the risks of radiation exposure both in the day-to-day and during a nuclear disaster. How did radiation from Japan make its way into milk produced on the West coast? Radioactive particles traveled through the atmosphere to the United States, where they settled on grass and in water that was consumed by some cows. The radiation passed through the cows and into the milk. Should I be worried about radiation exposure from dairy products? According to both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration, no. The milk samples taken in Washington and California contained radioactive particles at concentrations 5000 times lower than the limit that the FDA has deemed safe for human consumption. FDA senior scientist Patricia Hansen told CNN that the radiation levels found in recent milk samples are "miniscule" compared to the exposure that people face in their daily lives. What's more, the particles found in the samples come from an isotope known as ... 359 views |
HD underwater video. Diving mango bay and Japanese gardens a few days ago. The viz is great at the moment and we were lucky enough to see a few unusual and beautiful creatures on these dives. I just wanted to throw a little video together when I found a spare 5 min as the diving was to nice to stick the shots in the footage archive to forget about! The marble snake eel was a great find. Watch the cuttle fish changing color as it moves away. Also lucky enough to get the eagle rays feeding! great! Shot with a sony XR 520 camera in a Aquatica housing. Great system. Enjoy. www.oceansbelow.net 2647 views |

New dives in Japan
![]() |
The legendary diving of southern Japan is opening to western groups for the first time. New packages will offer guided trips to the Okinawa archipelago, which harbours an array of underwater attractions large and small. It has been possible to visit Okinawa's remote sites for years, but the language barrier has made travel there practically impossible for non-Japanese. Now, travel agency Open Coast is offering guided tours with bilingual guides.
Southern Japan's most famous dive site is the 'monument' at Yonaguni, a massive stone structure which has divided opinion among scientists: is it a huge man-made temple complex dating back 10,000 years or a freak formation which somehow echoes ancient Mayan temples? Open Coast has different itineraries available to visiting divers. The Yonaguni Monument Expedition, which also offers chances of seeing mantas, hammerheads and humpback whales, is priced £1,845.
The next trip is due to depart in October this year, when the arrival of pacific mantas in the region coincides with Okinawa's tug-of-war festival, in which thousands of locals challenge each other to a tug o' war with a 40-ton rope.
