Pescador Island, Cebu, Philippines

Small though it is, many divers hold it to be one of the finest spots in the archipelago, and there are many ways to approach what at first looks like a straightforward dive.

Above the water, the island is a cigar-shaped sliver of fossilised coral limestone, but underwater you get healthy coral gardens: a melting-pot of reefs populated by morays, frogfish, lionfish, schools of pyramid butterflyfish, clown triggerfish and sea turtles. The rays of the sun penetrate the deep water, lighting the background as if by magic.

For me, Pescador Island is a little slice of paradise. What more could I ask for?
