Multiple Firsts: Composite from first 4 dives with new Intova IC12, in eastern caribbean, and edited during first use of Quicktime and saved as .mov file. First half is composite from two, 25-30 ft dives, and was not white balanced - ends with annelid (segmented worm). Second half is composite from two, 55-65 ft dives, was properly white balanced at depth, and starts with the Spiny Lobster clip. Awesome macro ability. This camera takes great still shots, too, but a design flaw results in a serious shadow when the flash is heavily relied upon for stills - which occasionally happened. Look for an in-depth review, and a very effective work-around solution, coming to Amazon, soon. Considering all other cameras on the market (even with the flash-flaw) this is a wonderful camera for both stills and video. No regrets. Also, first entry on YouTube. All pretty easy. INDepth - Eastern Caribbean

It’s not by chance that the producers of the Pirates of the Caribbean series of Hollywood movies chose St Vincent and Dominica as locations. Both islands offer the rustic charm and unspoiled richness of environment that can, with little effort, take you back hundreds of years. Factor in the island of St Lucia, which lies between the two, and you have destinations that provide three very different experiences for the travelling diver.
St Lucia is a maturing package destination, with an efficient infrastructure and well-established dive centres. This island gears itself towards stress-free holidays, offering reasonable diving that will appeal to beginners and satisfy casual divers. The other two islands are more rustic, appealing to those who are prepared to forego a few luxuries in order to get off the beaten track. Here, the quality of the diving alone is enough to attract experienced divers, but diving isn’t the only thing they offer.
Dominica is the domain of what the travel industry has come to call ‘eco-tourism’. It offers good hiking, mountain-biking and bird-watching in addition to some extremely good diving. The underwater scenery is as spectacular as the scenery above water – the steep jagged landscape plummeting away to abyssal depths right from the shore. The proximity of deep water provides a hunting ground for the resident population of sperm whales – which can be seen at the surface.
St Vincent, meanwhile, has acquired a reputation for ‘muck diving’, a term coined by underwater photographers to describe an environment that appears drab but has lots of small, colourful creatures living in it. The most famous muck-diving sites tend to be in Southeast Asia, but around St Vincent you can view endemic Caribbean species in much the same way. You will not find large resorts here, and the chances are yours will be the only dive boat at a given site.
On all three islands Visibility often exceeds 30m, but the sites are susceptible to run-off, with its attendant murk, during and after periods of rainfall
Getting there
Scheduled flights go directly to St Lucia with Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and BWIA. Caribbean Star Airlines (www.flycaribbeanstar.com) offers extensive inter-island flights running several times a day making it possible to reach St Vincent and Dominica from St Lucia (although y0u will have to change airports at ST lucia), Barbados and Antigua.
Seasonality
Temperature varies only slightly all year round, averaging 30ºC for all islands. The wettest time of year is during hurricane season (June–November), which is low season. All three islands are at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, so the chances of a ‘direct hit’ are low, although tropical depressions may produce bad weather during the hurricane season.
What to pack
Smart, casual wear for dining, hiking boots or all-terrain sandals or cross-trainers for topside activities. Binoculars and telephoto lenses are useful for the birds and whale watching. A light raincoat if you go during rainy season always comes in handy. All three islands use the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, with US dollars also widely accepted. Cash is available at cashpoints and most popular credit cards are accepted by resorts and dive centres.
