
Tony Groom joined the Royal Navy in 1975 at the age of 16. A year later, he trained as a diver and went on to become an underwater disposal expert, embarking on a a dramatic career in bomb disposal that took him all over the world – including the Falklands during the war in 1982.
In 1985, he joined the commercial diving world. His time on North Sea oil rigs saw him working at depths greater than 200m on deep-saturation, salvage missions. It was during an interview with the BBC in 2007 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Falklands war that it was suggested he write a book about his experiences. The 48-year-old wasted little time and his new book, Diver, was published nine months later.
