Olympus µ Tough 8010 and PT-048 housing

In many ways, this Olympus is the odd one out – but not in a negative way, as it is the only camera that is waterproof in its own right to a creditable 10m. In addition, it can withstand a fall from 2m, is freezeproof to –10°C and crushproof to 100kg, yet is not considerably larger than other models here. No wonder Olympus markets it for its toughness.
In photographic terms, it is quite a basic camera, presumably because when in the conditions in which it can be used, the last thing you want is an array of photographic choices for your cold fingers to operate. Having said that, it is designed to take automatic images in conditions that would ruin other cameras, and as such, it will appeal to those who don’t want to worry about their precious camera come wind, rain or snow. A nice feature is the one-touch switch to record movies in up to 720p quality when a moving image would be more appropriate. Pushing the same switch again stops the recording, saves the movie and returns you to stills mode.
The PT-048 housing increases the depth capability to 40m, has a hot shoe for accessories and a 52mm filter thread for external lenses and filters. It looks tough too, thanks to the solid front housing, and the array of rear push-button controls are multi-levelled for ease of operation. As a result, it handles and controls the camera extremely well.
