Canon Powershot G10 and Ikelite G10 housing
It’s just as well that this review is not about comparisons, because this combination is like none of the others.  |
This camera and housing easily outperforms the rest; in fact, it would hold its own among digital SLRs, such are the capabilities of the camera and the functions of the housing.
It provides full auto and manual control without compromise as well as featuring built-in external flash triggering.
It’s difficult to ignore the size of the housing, though. For decades, Ikelite has produced economical solutions by machining existing housings to suit the camera. The result is a type of ‘one size fits all’ philosophy, which, in the main, solves problems but with a certain degree of physical compromise.
Unlike other housings, Ikelite’s design necessitates that the camera is mounted onto a baseplate, so setting it up is a little more cumbersome. But once installed, the camera is perfectly positioned to perform.
Being so much larger, the housing displaces more water, so needs the base counterweight and handle to maintain sensible buoyancy. This obviously increases the combo’s bulk, but its performance makes it a serious camera outfit: as such, most users would be using it throughout the dive in the manner of a digital SLR housing, rather than, as with the small housings, having them hanging on their wrist or in their BC pocket for occasional use.
