The camera has good specs, with a large LCD screen and 12 megapixels, while the controls are well placed and logical to operate. In a strange way, it is actually easier to operate in the housing than out, as most of the controls are offset, making them further apart.
The housing has a reassuringly chunky feel to it, with well-rounded corners and a useful rear LCD screen shade for bright conditions. There is also a top accessory shoe that would be ideal for attaching a focusing light.
The front port has a removable cover that reveals a bayonet fitting for a wide-angle lens accessory, while optically triggered flashguns, such as the YS-27DX with its arm and mounting tray, can be used for improved lighting. For video users, there is HD-quality capability at 1280 x 720 output, making this a very capable outfit.
The Sea & Sea DX-1200HD is designed to grow with your needs, and as such, it is a good package for beginners that offers expandability.
