Salary range: £21,000–£53,000 plus benefits, such as a pension.
Skills/qualifications needed: You can apply through your local Armed Forces careers office to do a two-and-a-half day pre-entry test at the diving school. You’ll be assessed physically and mentally. The entry standard is high and is similar to the Royal Marines. If you’re already in the Navy, you can apply for a transfer.
What the job involves: There are so many different areas. I locate, inspect and carry out controlled explosions of devices. Also, I do repair work on nuclear submarines anywhere in the world, beach clearances for military purposes, experimental diving and testing of new equipment.
Best part of the job: Every day is different. You have to make vital decisions when dealing with explosives. I also enjoy dealing with the public. It’s quite exhilarating at times.
Worst part of the job: When on mine countermeasure work, you are at sea and not diving. That’s certainly been the most depressing part of my career.
Advice to jobseekers: Training is strenuous – you have to be motivated and be an outgoing person. You must be calm under pressure and be prepared to work long hours. But it’s a wonderful career.
