Bill Chilton, 33, is now based offshore on oil platforms in the North Sea, but began his commercial diving career working the fish farms off the west coast of Scotland.

Salary range: £50,000–£100,000.

Skills/qualifications needed: HSE Parts I–III – air diving, saturation mixed gas and inshore/commercial.

What the job involves: Inspections, repairs and maintenance. Working 12-hour shifts.

Best part of the job: When everything works!

Worst part of the job: Being absolutely penniless after forking out for my HSE courses.

Advice to jobseekers: The same advice that was given to me ten years ago when I knew nothing about commercial diving: get a trade, such as welding, and then get your diving qualification.
