The author – a professional underwater cinematographer – is a versatile photographer, and his book is an account of his efforts to photograph large marine animals, from the green turtle to the sperm whale.

While the book is nicely presented, Bird’s attempt to marry marine biology with personal travelogue comes across as rather laboured. Much of it is written in the first person, but I found the text uninvolving. There are many good photographs here, but the visual impact is weakened by a few too many mediocre shots, plus repeat pictures of the same animals (mostly Atlantic spotted dolphins) to pad out the pages.
