£190 for all three parts
one-piece £150,
waistcoat £60,
hood £26
The Beaver Icelandic Ultra comprises three parts, incorporating a 7mm one-piece suit, a waistcoat and hood. These can be worn in a combination of ways to suit the water conditions. The suit is made from Ultraflex neoprene with a thermally efficient silver-plush titanium lining and comes in a selection of three colour schemes. Extra features include zipped wrists and ankles, reinforced heavy-duty kneepads and a thigh pocket for storage.
The main suit was easy to get into as it is made of stretchable neoprene, but my hands slipped a little too easily through the wrist seals, so some water ingress may have been possible here. It was comfortable and flexible both on land and underwater, and I had plenty of mobility. The waistcoat, however, was the only one tested on the day that didn't have thigh-length legs and this let it down in the cold conditions. As soon as I entered the lake, my middle felt extremely chilly and this could have been avoided with normal thigh-length legs. Perhaps in the conditions the Icelandic 2000, which comes with longer legs, would have been a better contender. Although the hood fitted snugly around the neck it left a large gap at the top - clearly meant for people with big heads.
VERDICT
The look: The main suit is available in three great colour schemes, but the swimsuit-style waistcoat does seem a little outdated and lets down the whole ensemble.
Style: 6/10
Performance: 7/10
