A diver was airlifted to a decompression chamber yesterday (Tuesday) suffering from decompression illness.
The man had been diving on the wreck of the Salsette in Weymouth Bay from the charter boat Wey Chieftain IV.
He had dived to 44m for 80 minutes and completed all decompression stops. He was back on land and in his own car before he reported symptoms of DCI.
The coastguard was alerted and when the diver's condition deteriorated, it co-ordinated a rescue by helicopter. The diver was taken by boat out of Weymouth harbour in order for the helicopter to be able to winch him aboard and take him to a recompression chamber in Poole.
