Divers asked to help halt illegal fishing

Egypt's Chamber of Diving and Watersports (CDWS) is asking divers to send in photos of illegal fishing in the Red Sea.

The CDWS has launched the new campaign 'Capture the Catcher' in a bid to raise the Egyptian government's awareness of the problem and name and shame illegal fishermen.

Hesham Gabr, chairman of the CDWS, said: 'One of the biggest environmental problems is clearly identified as illegal fishing, particularly in marine zones which are supposed to be protected. We need to keep this issue at the forefront of the government's mind, which is why we have set up this campaign.'

Fishing is banned in some areas of the Red Sea, including popular dive sites such as Ras Mohammed near Sharm El Sheikh and Abu Dabab in the south. Shark fishing is also illegal.

Anyone who sees evidence of fishing in no-take zones such as lines or nets should photograph it and send the pictures together with details of the date, time and location the photo was taken to fishing@cdws.travel

If this is aimed at anyone other than dive professionals and locals, a means to identify the protected zones is required.
