A teacher who died after a diving accident on a school trip to Scapa Flow off Orkney, Scotland on Monday (20 October) has been named by police. Janet A'Lee, 52, from Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon, was diving with a group of students from the school's dive club when she got into difficulties.
A'lee fell unconsioucious shortly after surfacing from the dive and was taken to shore by boat. Despite efforts by paramedics and doctors to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her partner, who is also a teacher, was diving with another group of students when the incident happened.
Blundell School headmaster Ian Davenport told reporters: 'The police have confirmed that all the other members of the party, staff and pupils, are safe and well.
'Janet was a very experienced and highly qualified diver and a popular and respected member of staff. This awful accident is the subject of a police investigation and we will be cooperating fully in any way we can.'
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
A spokesman for the Northern Constabulary said: 'There were seven in the party, which included senior pupils from the school they both worked at in Tiverton, when the incident happened.'
