A security fence has started to be built around the popular Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh in a bid to protect tourists from terrorist attacks. Three terrorist bombs killed more than 60 people in the Egyptian resort in July.
Egyptian officials said the fence would stretch for 12 miles to prevent vehicles from entering tourist areas without first being forced through checkpoints. More than a mile of the 1.5m-high fence has already been constructed.
Once completed, access to Sharm will be restricted to police-monitored entry points, which will be equipped with highly advanced explosive-detection equipment.
However, the move has been criticised by groups who said the fence would cut off nearby Egyptian residencies. Egyptian officials defended their position on the construction, claiming it would prevent a repeat of July's terrorist attack.
