Petition to ban shark finning in Bahamas
Friday, 08 October 2010 10:17
A petition asking the government of the Bahamas to ban shark finning has been launched
Sharks have never been commercially fished in the Bahamas, but now a seafood export company is considering expanding to sell shark fins.
Sunco Wholesale Seafood Ltd has a license to export sea cucumbers to Hong Kong and harvests around 5,000 sea cucumbers a day. To export shark fins they would need another license. The petition asks the Bahamian government to ban shark fishing now, before it starts.
The Bahamas banned long-line fishing 20 years ago and the country's sharks now attract divers from around the world.
