Shark sanctuary declared in Marshall Islands

The world’s largest shark sanctuary has been created in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The country has banned shark fishing in its waters, which cover 750,000 square miles.
It has also outlawed trade in shark products and ruled that any shark accidentally caught must be returned to the sea alive.
‘In passing this bill, there is no greater statement we can make about the importance of sharks to our culture, environment and economy,’ said senator Tony deBrum. ‘Ours may be a small island nation, but our waters are now the biggest place sharks are protected.’
The Marshall Islands follow Palau and the Bahamas in declaring their waters a shark sanctuary.
