Choosing a women's BC

Some BCs have a habit of being uncomfortable for women because of the position of the chest straps, while others are sometimes cut too low and thus prone to digging in around the hip area. For these reasons, most leading manufacturers have produced BCs for women that have been designed with these areas of discomfort in mind.

Tips on choosing a BC
-
Try it on while wearing what you normally dive in – for example, a drysuit – as this will ensure you get the right size
-
Ensure that drysuit valves are not obscured by the BC straps. If you normally wear gloves, put them on and try all valves and clips
-
Try it on with a cylinder in position. This also gives you a chance to operate the camband system – some are easier than others
-
Preferably dive with it before you buy – even a dip in a swimming pool will give you a good idea of how it feels. Fully inflate the BC and test the surface support it offers
-
Fill the weight pouches with lead, then fit and remove them – how easy is it to carry out?
-
Put accessories in the pockets and try to retrieve them – several of the BC’s pockets we tested were difficult to access
-
Take any reels, DSMBs and torches with you and attach them where you want them – are the D-rings in the correct place?
