Mares-raptor-thumbCharles Hood rates these Mares heavyweight split fins

Mares-raptor-mainMares Raptor, £109.95

The Raptor features what Mares calls an advanced design and combination of materials, including the ‘Whale Tail’ foot pocket for maximum energy transfer fromfoot to blade, which maximises thrust and efficiency. As with other Mares fins, they include ABS Plus buckles, which the company claims needs only one quickmovement to open or close, even when you’re wearing thick neoprene gloves. The double-button release prevents the buckle from opening accidentally. You can’t go wrong buying Mares fins – the company has dominated this sector of thediving market for years, but the Raptor is its first venture into split fins. They work well, and the generous boot pocket comfortably accommodates a large drysuit boot. They area touch on the heavy side, which was noticeable, but this could help if you are prone tohaving floaty legs when diving. The one thing that lets them down is the buckle system –it works well with ungloved hands, but for UK waters is far too fiddly.

Smooth swimming with these and the split fin adapts nicely when one changes direction. There is certainly that efficiency feeling when one kicks with these, compared to the old rigid tigulio fins I used to use. The buckles work OK, but are a little awkward with gloves. The best immediate solution is to put on the fins first, without gloves and go diving and after diving take off one glove at least to give the added dexterity if needed. Really, its just a case of getting used to it. You will also notice if you have forgotten them, as the weight will not be there. Underwater, the weight is no issue and they swim and help you glide though the water easily. At as low as £85 a good value buy for the money too. If you pay more than £95- 100 though you are not getting such a great deal. Perhaps the best for their place in the fin range, but look out for some places overcharging. £95 is a fair price, if you can't get the best deal I've noticed of £85.
