You need good eyesight to read all of the digits and icons on the display of Immersion’s futuristic-looking Prowler, as it’s packed full of information. Having said that, the digits are no more difficult to pick out than those on most of its competitors.
The Prowler features a Swiss-made Intersema depth sensor, which is automatically activated when it comes into contact with water. The display then changes into ‘dive mode’ and shows depth, maximum depth, temperature and a rapid-ascent warning, as well as acting as a fully functional chronograph. The digits are enhanced by a green LCD, which uses a special polarising film in the display for added sharpness. In gloomy conditions, the display is further enhanced by an electro-luminescent backlight.
There is a battery power indicator and a sleep mode that helps to reduce the overall power consumption of the watch. The chronograph itself gives the time in two time zones and has a whole heap of alarms and three different countdown timers, covering every type of decompression schedule you care to throw at it. Finally, a logbook facility gives you the date, time, maximum depth and temperatures of any dives you’ve undertaken.
So who is it aimed at? After taking it on half a dozen dives, I think it’s for the diver who uses tables or needs a back-up to a dive computer. Alternatively, it would make a great free-diving and snorkelling watch.
