Seac Sub D-Synchro Ice regulator, £290; Seac Sub P-Synchro pony regulator, £165
Weighing in at just over 1.1kg, the D-Synchro Ice (DIN 230 bar) is one of the latest additions to the lightweight regulator market. The polished chrome first stage is equipped with two high-pressure and four low-pressure ports. The second stage is light with a simple grey-and-black rubber front – it isn’t the prettiest regulator on the block, but does allow for incredibly easy manual purging, even when wearing the thickest of gloves.
The mouthpiece has been designed to prevent jaw fatigue and is very comfortable, while the exhaust port is intended to fit snugly under the chin. Breathing at depth was very smooth and easy, with no fluttering or freeflows. My only criticism is that I could occasionally hear a squeak coming from somewhere, but this didn’t affect the breathability.
I was pleasantly surprised when I swapped over to the P-Synchro pony regulator (right). It is everything a pony reg needs to be: small, light, comfortable and delivers your air incredibly smoothly at depth. The front of the second stage is rubber – just like its big brother, but in yellow and black.
Do ensure that the venturi switch is not on maximum flow when you do a giant stride into the water though, as it can be very sensitive and is likely to freeflow.
